Giving Back is Like a Warm Hug
Marching down a rough bush path for our morning trek, Margrit and I (Russ) stumbled upon fresh Rhino tracks. Excitedly, we followed, hoping to discover the mom and calf we had driven past the day before.
This may sound foolish and to some extent it was. But, we had grown to love these chubby beasts, especially their babies; feeling very protective due to the massive poaching their kind endure.
Luckily, we came to our senses. No guide, no gun, in heavy bush… we would come back later. Also, the fresh story of an experience National Geographic photographer recently gored by a water buffalo may have influenced our decision just a bit.
So, how did two relatively soft, relatively old city folk come to travel the wilds of Africa for 5 years in a 20-year-old Land Rover, trying to help people save wildlife?
Life is too good and Life’s 2 Short to be stuck and not make a difference.
Now don’t get me wrong. We didn’t just wake up one morning, like Captain America ready to conquer evil at every turn. Pulled forward into our African travels we slowly leaning into the thrill of making a difference one small step at a time.
This had been true of many important make a difference experiences throughout our lives; from kissing boo boos to steadying wobbly bike seats, from leading youth groups to inspiring coal miners, from conducting team building sessions to coaching business owners, and from pulling turtles off busy roads to feeding feral cats.
No matter the circumstances, each had its moment of fulfillment and actual joy. Like a hug, the shared experience of growth and kindness felt warm and… well nice.
Now, this little website is a bit selfish on our part, yet at the same time we hope it will make a difference for you as well.
Mostly, we want to share our African adventures, kind of like a group hug. And maybe, just maybe sharing our adventures and our musings on Life’s 2 Short will inspire you to lean deeper into your adventures that may seem impossible at the moment.
The key is conquering your fears and caring for someone or something more than your selfie.
Enjoy the day and do some good!
