Back in Time, New Mexico
Camped on a knoll surrounded by a massive 40 mile ancient lava flow with mountains rising out of the desert nearby… there is a strange sense of going back in time.
Most people don’t appreciate New Mexico, USA. Too arid, nothing to see, just a place to travel through while getting somewhere else.
But for us, it is a piece of paradise; wild, remote, extensive vistas, fascinating history, plentiful wildlife and birds, turbulent storms, and a deep silence to contemplate just about anything.
Forward to Travel Africa?
What we have often contemplated over the past 27 months is how to finally get back to the beauty and vulnerability of Africa. Yes 27 months! Almost half as long as we traveled there with Landy.
Yes, we have aged, gotten soft, built Tembo (our State side overlander), enjoyed the heck out of our family, and pined away for Africa. And, I must admit, we rediscovered the majesty of the western United States; especially the Rocky Mountains from the Northern Cascades in Washington State down to the Gila National Forest here in New Mexico.
Yet, the push and pull to get back to Africa have been constant and a real pain. I’m sure you know the feeling with COVID; start stop, plan replan, yes no maybe, and rarely allowed to proceed with anything ‘normal’.
Well, add to that the extreme political situations in Africa (sound familiar) and you get the picture.
But wait, imagine our tentative anticipation to board an African bound plane on September 13, 2021. Cross your fingers and hope to avoid the Delta variant. These fully vaccinated non-COVID old folks are headed to rescue our old Land Rover from growing roots.
That is, if the world doesn’t shut down and keep us from our other paradise… again.
Enjoy the day and do some good
