“It’s Africa”
One of the best things of traveling Africa… its never dull. Everyday is full of surprises and our day in Kigali, the capitol of Rwanda is no different.
First we go from place to place to find someone able and willing to adjust our alignment. The rough highway on the Tanzania side did us in. (watch the video prior to this one in the playlist.)
Then, a lorry (dump truck) takes out our left side mirror. It is of course crazy, when you’re driving a right hand drive vehicle on the opposite side of the road it’s made for! Again, like the alignment it takes forever.
In Kigali the main roads are paved, well marked and have robots (traffic lights.) However, as soon as you travel a secondary road the city turns immediately rural. The roads are dirt, full of potholes and the businesses primitive. It takes many tries to finally find a small shop, well a large building with not much in it and even less activity. Here, in their dusty parts section they find a side mirror. It’s for the other side of the Land Rover, but it will do.
Our surprises aren’t over yet. When using the ATM machine… you guessed it. It steals my debit card. That’s a sinking feeling when you’re only passing through town. Fortunately, the bank is right there next to the ATM. I stand guard, holding up the ever growing queue of people, while Russ enters the bank. Within minutes he’s back with the card. A kind bank attendant responded immediately and went behind the scenes to retrieve it. Whew! Major crisis averted.
The day has begun to turn around. We finally drive back to our camping spot in the parking lot of the hotel. We’re hungry and decide to try out the restaurant. We sit outside on the veranda overlooking the city. And the dinner? Well, delightfully scrumptious.
Another ‘ordinary’ day on our #EpicLandRoverAdventure during 2016-2017.
